Book Reviews

These are the books that I have read, and what I think about them. Reviews are based on how books affected me personally, and not on technical aspects of the books. Rating is on a scale of 5. This list begins with books read starting in July of 1996.

I read these books during one of the most adventurous Summers of my life. I am not quite sure if my Summer added to my enjoyment of the books, or vice versa. What struck me was how similar many of the thoughts and behaviors of the characters are similar to actions of people today. For example, the flirting games played between Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher were extremely similar to the games I played in Junior High School.

The picture painted of slavery is invaluable, and perhaps one of the most important aspects of this book. The books were enjoyable, however not greatly personal. They were "fun" and complimented a great Summer for me.

The Chosen

Chaim Potok September 1996 4

This was my second time reading this book. There are so many parallels between the characters and my own mormon upbringing. On a personal level, this book is very important to me. Many of us who are convinced that we are God's chosen people have much to learn from each other.

The story isn't earth shaking, but paints a simple picture of growing up with expectations place upon us by our Parents and communities. Often, I think it is a crime that we try so hard to mold our children into what we want them to be, rather than letting them discover life for themselves. Do we have such little faith in the concept of truth?
